Police responded to a call at around 3:25 p.m. on 12 December and pronounced Greene dead at the scene.

Authorities said there were no signs of foul play, though the medical examiner will determine an official cause of death.

Greene’s manager, Gregg Edwards, confirmed the news, describing him as “a terrific guy” and “arguably one of the greatest character actors on the planet.”

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Greene rose to prominence in the early 1990s with leading roles in Laws of Gravity (1992) and Clean, Shaven (1993).

He went on to play Zed in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, a role that cemented his status as a recognizable screen villain.

Edwards told reporters that Greene’s death was unexpected.

The actor had been preparing to begin work on a new independent film, Mascots, alongside Mickey Rourke.

A neighbour told the New York Daily News that Greene was found face down with a facial injury. “Blood everywhere,” the neighbour said.

The outlet also reported that police found a handwritten note on Greene’s door reading: “I’m still a Westie,” referencing the 1970s Irish-American gang once based in Hell’s Kitchen.
