The next chapter of Marvel’s sprawling superhero saga is now officially on the clock.
With one year to go, the filmmakers behind the franchise’s biggest hits are signaling that the endgame is drawing closer.
The countdown arrives as Marvel Studios continues to reshape its future following major casting changes and renewed focus on its core Avengers stories.
Return to marvel
Anthony and Joe Russo confirmed they are back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in December 2026.
The pair, best known for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, were announced in 2024 as returning for two films central to the Multiverse Saga.
To mark the one-year milestone, the brothers released a brief teaser featuring an official countdown to the movie’s release.
According to Marvel Studios announcements, the project represents their first MCU directing effort since 2019.
Their return coincides with renewed fan interest as Marvel positions Doomsday as one of its most ambitious Phase 6 releases.
Trailers and filming
Marvel has already begun previewing the film in theaters.
Multiple Avengers: Doomsday trailers are currently screening ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash, with different teasers rotating weekly, according to industry reporting.
Principal photography on the film concluded in September. Additional filming is reportedly scheduled for spring 2026, suggesting further refinements ahead of release.
Before Doomsday arrives, the only other MCU film slated for release is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will see Tom Holland return as Peter Parker for the first time since 2021.
Marvel has not confirmed whether the character will appear in the ensemble Avengers film.
A new central villain
Marvel has shifted its overarching storyline following the departure of Jonathan Majors from the franchise.
The studio has confirmed that Victor von Doom will now serve as the primary antagonist of the Multiverse Saga.
Robert Downey Jr. was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 as the actor bringing Doctor Doom to the screen in the next two Avengers films. His casting marks a high-profile return to the MCU in a new role.
What comes next
After Avengers: Doomsday, the Russo brothers are set to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, with filming expected to begin next summer.
Marvel has also confirmed that the main cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps will appear in both films.
Marvel Studios has set Avengers: Doomsday for release on December 18, 2026.
