According to The Express, Donald Trump has framed the decision as taking effect immediately.

Tariff ultimatum

The US President used his Truth Social platform to issue what he described as a definitive warning to countries maintaining trade with Iran.

The message threatened sweeping penalties for any nation continuing commercial ties with Tehran.

“Effective immediately. Any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Mr Trump wrote.
“This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention on this matter.”

No further details were provided on how the tariff would be implemented or enforced, the paper reported.

Pressure on partners

The announcement could have serious consequences for major economies with established links to Iran.

According to The Express, countries such as China, India and Russia are among those likely to be affected.

Russia and Iran share a long-standing relationship dating back centuries.
In recent years, that partnership has expanded through energy, trade and political cooperation.

The two countries have steadily increased bilateral trade over the past decade.
Their ties were further formalised with the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty earlier this year by Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Unrest inside Iran

The tariff warning comes as Iran faces widespread anti-government protests.
Demonstrations have continued for weeks, with reports suggesting dozens of protesters have been killed.

According to The Express, the instability has played a role in Washington’s decision to escalate economic pressure.

Mr Trump has also warned of possible military action if the violence against protesters continues.

Message of support

Alongside the economic measures, the US President has publicly voiced support for the protest movement.
In a separate Truth Social post over the weekend, he aligned Washington with calls for change.

“Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before,” Mr Trump wrote.
“The USA stands ready to help!!”
