Shooting during stop

NBC News reported that a federal officer shot a man in the leg during an attempted traffic stop on Wednesday evening.

The Department of Homeland Security said the shooting happened just before 7 p.m., about 12 miles from where Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot last week.

DHS said officers were trying to stop a Venezuelan man who they allege is in the country illegally. According to the department, the man fled in a vehicle, crashed into a parked car and then ran away.

During the pursuit, DHS said the officer was assaulted while struggling with the man on the ground.

Alleged attack

According to the DHS statement, two other people emerged from an apartment and attacked the officer with a shovel and a broom handle. The department said the original suspect then broke free and also began attacking the officer with one of the objects.

“Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life,” DHS said, adding that the man was shot in the leg.

The agency said the wounded man and the officer were taken to hospital, while the two other men were taken into custody.

Crowds and reaction

Minneapolis officials said the injured man’s wounds were believed to be non-life-threatening. “We understand there is anger,” the city said. “We ask the public to remain calm.”

Police Chief Brian O’Hara later declared the protest unlawful, saying fireworks, rocks and ice were being thrown at officers. “It is well past the line, and people need to leave,” he said.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, speaking shortly after the shooting, urged residents to document what he described as “atrocities” by immigration agents and called on President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to “end this occupation.”

Conflicting accounts

NBC News reported that a video posted on Facebook showed family members inside a home pleading for help, saying a man had been shot in the leg by ICE officers. “Please, help us. We have children,” one man said in the recording.

It was not immediately clear whether the video showed the same incident. NBC News said it geolocated the video to the same neighbourhood and around the same time as the shooting.

The FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are processing evidence at the scene, while the earlier fatal shooting of Good remains under investigation.
