A dispute between federal immigration authorities and state officials in Minnesota has escalated into a constitutional warning from the White House. President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of deploying US troops inside the state, invoking a rarely used federal law.

The comments reflect growing tension over immigration enforcement and protest response.

Warning from Trump

President Donald Trump said he may invoke the Insurrection Act to send US troops to Minnesota, accusing state leaders of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT,” Trump wrote Thursday on Truth Social.

He added that doing so would ‘quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great state,’ CNN reported

What the law allows

The Insurrection Act was first passed in 1792 and later modified in 1871. It allows a president to deploy military forces within the United States under certain conditions.

The law operates alongside the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which generally restricts the use of the US military for domestic law enforcement.

Rarely used power

Trump has previously threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act. He raised the possibility during protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Portland last year.

The most recent time the law was formally invoked was in 1992, when California’s governor requested federal assistance from President George H.W. Bush during riots in Los Angeles.
