Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark has died at the age of 83, the Greek Royal Family has confirmed. According to the family, she passed away at 11:40am local time at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.
It was reported that she was surrounded by family members at the time of her death.
In a statement, the Greek Royal Family said: ‘It is with deep sadness that the Greek Royal Family announces that HRH Princess Irene, a beloved sister and aunt, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2016, at 11:40 local time, at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, surrounded by loved ones. Details regarding the funeral procession will follow,’ the Express reported
Close family ties
Princess Irene was the sister of Queen Sofia of Spain, who cancelled all official engagements this week as Irene’s condition worsened. Earlier reports described the princess’s health as “critical” and “fragile”.
The sisters, daughters of the late King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece, were known to be particularly close. Irene, who never married, lived in an apartment at the Spanish royal residence.
Last public appearance
Princess Irene was last seen in public in February 2025, when she attended the wedding of her nephew, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, to Chrysi Vardinogiánni in Athens.
It is believed Queen Sofia was likely with her sister at the time of her death, although this has not been officially confirmed.
Recent losses
Her death comes three years after the passing of her brother, Constantine II, the last King of the Hellenes, who died in January 2023.
