With rumors about Trump’s mental abilities already raging, the internet quickly picked up on the slip of the tongue.
When global tensions rise, political leaders find themselves managing multiple international crises at the same time.
Juggling complex situations often leads to high-pressure press briefings where questions bounce rapidly between different global hotspots. Sometimes, a simple slip of the tongue in these moments can create public confusion.
But when a political leader is already under scrutiny for cognitive decline, with rumors about early signs of dementia being floated by political opponents, health experts, and former associates, a slip of the tongue can quickly add fuel to the already growing fire.
A busy Wednesday
US President Donald Trump recently held a significant telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe served as a major topic during their Wednesday exchange.
Following this call, the American leader faced inquiries from reporters gathered inside the Oval Office.
The media pool wanted to know how the administration was balancing its military commitments.
Comparing the timelines
A journalist representing CNN specifically pressed the president on the expected duration of two distinct conflicts.
The reporter asked whether the current military engagement in Iran or the conflict in Ukraine would conclude sooner.
Trump responded to the network by musing on the potential timelines for both situations.
According to CNN, the president stated, “Which war would end first? They might follow a similar timeline.”
The apparent slip-up
The conversation then shifted toward assessing the current strength of the opposing armed forces.
As reported by CNN, Trump declared that “Ukraine, militarily, is defeated.”
However, journalists at the network quickly pointed out that the president almost certainly made a verbal error.
They concluded he intended to reference Tehran rather than Kyiv, based on the specific military hardware he mentioned next.

Counting the ships
His subsequent remarks focused heavily on the comprehensive destruction of enemy naval vessels.
Trump elaborated on the maritime damage while taking a familiar jab at media coverage.
As broadcast by CNN, Trump said, “You wouldn’t know this from reading fake news, but militarily, look, there are 159 ships—every one is underwater right now. That’s quite a lot.”
He pushed back against any suggestion that the rival military was successfully holding its ground.
Increasing rumors
Trump, who turns 80 in June, has repeatedly been described as showing signs of early dementia.
Critics cite his “rambling” speeches and unusual behavioral outbursts as signs of declining mental health.
In 2018 and 2025, Trump took the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, which is used as a screening tool for possible dementia. According to him, he “aced” the test, but the scores have not been publicly released.
In July 2025, Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common and generally benign condition in which leg veins struggle to send blood back to the heart. Doctors said it is not life-threatening.
