A quiet evening gathering turned into a dangerous incident when an unexpected explosion shook a group of children in Austria. Authorities say the cause traces back decades.
Investigators are now working to understand how the danger remained undetected, reports HotNews.
Explosion at campsite
According to HotNews, citing Reuters, five children between the ages of 10 and 14 were injured on Saturday evening in northern Austria after an explosive device detonated beneath their campfire.
The group, visiting from another part of the country, had gathered at the site before the blast occurred.
Emergency services responded quickly, and the children were taken to a hospital in Linz for treatment.
Hidden danger found
Following the explosion, police searched the surrounding area and discovered another object containing explosives near a second campfire spot.
Officials described both items as remnants from World War II, still capable of detonating decades later.
A bomb disposal unit was called in to safely neutralize the second device.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities said they are now trying to determine how the explosives ended up beneath the campfire areas.
“Investigations are currently underway to determine how war relics ended up under the campfire area,” police said in a statement.
The extent of the children’s injuries has not yet been fully confirmed.
Rare but real risk
While unexploded wartime devices are occasionally uncovered in Austria, particularly during construction work, incidents involving injuries remain uncommon.
The case highlights the lingering dangers posed by historical war remnants that can remain hidden underground for years.
Officials continue to examine the site as part of the ongoing investigation.
