Chinese automaker BYD is rapidly expanding beyond its home market. The company is now outselling rivals in several key countries, including the UK.

The shift highlights growing competition in the global electric vehicle market. Tesla is facing increasing pressure overseas.

UK breakthrough

BYD has become the top-selling EV brand in the UK so far in 2026. According to Electrek, the company now holds more than 7% market share.

The automaker sold 12,754 electric vehicles through April. That pushed it ahead of Tesla, Kia and Volkswagen.

“With fuel prices remaining high, more drivers are turning to electric vehicles,” BYD UK manager Bono Ge said.

Overseas surge

While BYD’s sales in China have slowed, exports are rising quickly. Overseas deliveries jumped 70% year-on-year in April.

The company sold more than 135,000 vehicles abroad last month. That marked a new record for international sales.

BYD has been expanding aggressively into Europe, Latin America and Australia. The strategy is beginning to pay off.

Growing rivalry

Tesla remains the world’s best-known EV brand, but competition is intensifying. BYD is gaining ground with lower prices and a broader lineup.

The company now sells several EV models in the UK market. More vehicles are expected to launch later this year.

In Australia, BYD’s Sealion 7 was reportedly the country’s top-selling EV in April.

Brazil success

BYD is also making gains in South America. In Brazil, it became the first Chinese automaker to lead overall vehicle sales for a month.

The company sold more vehicles there in April than Volkswagen. That is notable given Volkswagen’s decades-long presence in the country.

BYD only entered Brazil’s passenger car market in 2021. Its rise has been unusually rapid.

Bigger picture

The global EV market is becoming more competitive as Chinese automakers expand overseas. Pricing and technology are becoming major advantages.

BYD is also investing in new charging technology and overseas production. The company says it wants to make high-tech EVs more affordable.

For Tesla and other rivals, the pressure is increasing. The race for global EV leadership is no longer centered on one company.
