A reported Ukrainian drone strike inside Moscow has drawn attention to Kyiv’s expanding long-range campaign against targets deep inside Russia, just days before the Kremlin’s annual Victory Day Parade.
Russian officials and local Telegram channels said drones approached the capital overnight on May 4, with one reportedly striking a luxury residential tower west of the city centre, according to The Kyiv Independent.
Deepening campaign
The incident comes as Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian military and industrial infrastructure far from the front line.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show a drone flying at low altitude toward Moscow shortly before 1 a.m. local time. Residents later reported hearing explosions across parts of the capital.
Images shared online showed damage near the upper floors of what Russian Telegram channels identified as the Mosfilm Tower, an upscale apartment complex located in one of Moscow’s wealthier districts.
Debris was reportedly scattered near the building while emergency services worked at the scene. The Kyiv Independent said it could not independently verify the reports or the claims made by Russian authorities.
Near the Kremlin
According to reports, the strike occurred roughly seven kilometres from the Kremlin and Red Square, where preparations are underway for Russia’s May 9 Victory Day Parade.
The area around the tower includes diplomatic residences and embassies, while the Russian Defence Ministry building is located only a few kilometres away.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that drones targeted the capital overnight and claimed there were no casualties.
Sobyanin later said Russian air defence systems intercepted two additional drones approaching the city.
Symbolic timing
Although Moscow has previously faced drone attacks, direct damage inside the capital’s residential districts remains relatively rare despite a rise in Ukrainian strikes in recent months.
Ukraine’s military had not commented on the reported attack at the time of publication, and the scale of the damage remained unclear.
The reported strike also came less than a week before Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, one of the Kremlin’s most important annual political and military events.
Russia’s Defence Ministry announced on April 28 that this year’s parade would not include displays of military equipment, a departure from previous years when tanks and other hardware featured prominently.
