Melania Trump spoke on May 6 during an event dedicated to mothers of American soldiers killed while serving in the military.
The ceremony took place just days before Mother’s Day in the United States according to Onet.
“Mothers help build the soul of our nation. I pray you will find strength as your loved one defends our freedom,” Melania said during the speech.
Audience reacts
At one point, the First Lady began describing Donald Trump as both a strong leader and a compassionate figure.
“Most people know my husband as a strong commander-in-chief, but his empathy transcends that role and shapes a caring leader who constantly remembers that every American soldier is someone’s child,” she said.
According to footage shared online, members of the audience began laughing shortly after the remark about Trump’s empathy.
Viral backlash
The moment quickly spread across social media platforms, where critics mocked the statement and questioned the description of the president.
“What is this woman saying?” one user wrote online.
Another commenter posted: “Empathy? He said he was going to destroy the entire country.”
Online criticism
Others described the situation as embarrassing and surreal.
“Well, this is a comedy,” another social media user wrote.
Additional comments included: “The bar is so low now, and we used to be a decent country” and “Empathetic people don’t need a spokesperson to announce to the world that they are empathetic.”
The White House has not publicly commented on the reaction to the viral clip.
