Honda is reportedly scaling back another major electric vehicle investment as global automakers rethink aggressive EV expansion plans.

The Japanese carmaker has reportedly frozen plans for a massive Canadian EV production hub that was once expected to become a centerpiece of its electrification strategy.

Multi-billion project stalls

According to CarExpert, citing Nikkei Asia, Honda’s planned Ontario EV facility has now been postponed indefinitely and could ultimately be scrapped.

The project, first announced in 2024, included plans for a large battery plant and annual production capacity of roughly 240,000 electric vehicles.

Canadian officials had previously backed the project as part of a broader push to strengthen North America’s EV supply chain.

Automakers rethink EV spending

Honda’s reported decision reflects a wider shift happening across the auto industry.

Several major manufacturers have recently delayed or cancelled EV projects as demand growth slows in some markets and hybrid vehicles continue gaining popularity.

Honda previously announced it would cut planned EV-related investment through 2030 by roughly 30%.

Hybrids making a comeback

Rather than focusing entirely on battery-electric vehicles, automakers are increasingly prioritizing hybrids and flexible production strategies.

Honda is now expected to lean more heavily on US production facilities capable of building gasoline, hybrid and electric vehicles on the same lines.

Ford and other global manufacturers have also adjusted EV plans while expanding hybrid offerings.

China competition intensifies

The EV market has become increasingly difficult for traditional automakers as Chinese brands continue expanding globally.

Companies including BYD are growing rapidly through lower pricing, faster product development and aggressive international expansion.

Honda has reportedly struggled in China, where domestic EV brands now dominate much of the market.

EV lineup shrinks

Honda has also reportedly cancelled several planned electric models tied to its upcoming 0 Series platform.

Only a smaller electric SUV currently appears set to move forward, while other previously announced EVs have reportedly been shelved.

The company’s Prologue electric SUV has also faced slower-than-expected sales in the US market.

What comes next

Despite slowing some EV plans, Honda is still expected to continue developing electrified vehicles over the coming years.

Industry analysts say automakers are increasingly taking a more cautious approach as they balance profitability concerns, changing consumer demand and intensifying global competition.
