The U.S. government is probing over 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles for potential engine issues that could pose serious safety risks. Here’s what owners need to know.

NHTSA Opens New Investigation

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a fresh probe following hundreds of complaints tied to Honda’s 3.5-litre V6 engines.

Engine Failures Linked to Bearing Defects

Drivers reported premature engine failure linked to the biela bearing, a key engine component, potentially leading to complete engine lock-up.

414 Complaints Triggered Action

As of August 20, authorities had received 414 complaints from vehicle owners — many involving models not previously recalled.

Affected Honda and Acura Models

The investigation covers:

  • Acura TLX (2018–2020)
  • Acura MDX (2016–2020)
  • Honda Pilot (2016–2020)
  • Honda Odyssey (2018–2020)
  • Honda Ridgeline (2017–2019)

Prior Recall in 2023

Honda recalled around 249,000 vehicles in November 2023 over similar defects, but the current probe includes many models not part of that recall.

Ongoing Engine Risks

Some vehicles may still face premature wear of the biela shaft, raising concerns of engine failure even after previous recalls.

Safety Risks Under Review

NHTSA’s current goal is to determine how widespread and severe the engine issue is — and whether additional safety actions are necessary.

What Drivers Should Do Now

Owners of the affected models should monitor official communications from Honda and NHTSA, and report any unusual engine behavior promptly.
