The ADAC organization (Europe's largest motorists' association with approximately 17 million members.) has published a ranking of the most recommended models for older drivers. Among other things, they took into account ease of use, ease of entry, and visibility from the interior. The vast majority of models are crossovers or small SUVs—such as the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota Cross, or Skoda Kamiq.

So which models are best for seniors and why?

Seniors' Special Requirements for Cars

Seniors have special requirements for cars, including the need for an elevated seating position and good visibility. Multimedia systems, now an integral part of almost every vehicle, should be legible and easy to use. The right model should also be practical and spacious, providing good visibility all around.

Audi Q2

This compact crossover, just under 4.20 meters long, impresses with its good finish, although it does not match the quality of the larger Audi models. The cockpit has been largely adopted from the latest Audi A3. Thanks to the uncluttered dashboard, all the basic functions are easy to operate. There is good space in the first row, and the comfortable seats are positioned high. Comfortable entry through the sufficiently large doors makes everyday life easier. The boot is of average dimensions for this vehicle class but practical and well-shaped, and its lid opens high. For city journeys, the basic petrol engine is completely sufficient.

Audi Q3

The second generation of the Q3 has grown both outside and inside to increase the gap to the smaller Q2 and has been significantly improved technologically. The model is now equipped with numerous assistance systems and a clear and easy-to-use infotainment system. The Q3 offers many conveniences, such as practical entry and exit, plenty of space for passengers, an adjustable rear seat, and a suitably large luggage compartment. While driving, you can enjoy good comfort and feel safe thanks to the numerous assistance systems. The high towing capacity of up to 2.2 tonnes is also practical.

Citroen C5 Aircross

This compact SUV shares its design with the Peugeot 308 and Opel Grandland, but it’s more comfortable than the other two, as well as other models in its segment. While many manufacturers unnecessarily “harden” their SUVs, it becomes clear after the first few meters of driving that the C5 Aircross has little in common with stiff suspension and instead focuses on comfort.

Ford Puma

Despite belonging to the segment of city crossovers, the Ford Puma stands out with its styling and pleasantly tuned suspension, which, in combination with the steering system, can even give you driving pleasure. Additionally, the Puma has a practical trunk and an uncomplicated multimedia system.

Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is available in many different versions—as a petrol, hybrid, and pure electric. Which drive is most suitable depends largely on the individual choice and the way of use. The hybrid drive is particularly efficient if you drive short distances in the city. Then the additional electric motor can make good use of its advantages and effectively support the petrol engine.

Kia Niro

The Kia Niro is available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid, both of which are refined, powerful, and fuel-efficient in everyday use—especially in city traffic. Anyone who often drives short distances and has the option of charging at home should take a closer look at the plug-in version.

Lexus LBX

If you want more style, it's worth looking at the smallest and cheapest Lexus. In no other small SUV do you get such a high-quality interior as in the Lexus LBX. It is equipped with a hybrid drive, so fuel consumption rarely exceeds 5-6 liters per 100 km.

Mercedes B-Class

In Germany, this car is often driven by seniors or used as a taxi—and there are many reasons for this. Getting in is pleasant thanks to the slightly raised body position, and you can comfortably cover longer distances on the comfortable seats. The good sense of space and good use of space in the second row also speak in favor of the small Mercedes. The build quality is high, and the boot is large enough.

Mercedes GLA

In 2020, the second generation of the GLA entered the market—visually significantly more massive and therefore more coherent than its predecessor. The optional suspension with adaptive damper control in Comfort mode “smooths out” bumps in an exceptionally comfortable way. Leather stitching, decorative inlays, and ambient interior lighting create a cozy atmosphere.

Nissan Qashqai

This popular crossover is a favorite among many drivers, including seniors. It features a high seating position, good visibility, and a well-thought-out interior layout with simple controls. The hybrid variant also makes it a fuel-efficient option.

Skoda Kamiq

This compact SUV is practical and spacious, offering a well-balanced ride with a slightly raised seating position. The Kamiq’s infotainment system is intuitive, and its wide-opening doors make it easy to enter and exit.

Toyota Corolla Cross

Toyota’s reputation for reliability is a key factor in the Corolla Cross’s appeal to older drivers. Its hybrid powertrain delivers excellent fuel economy, and the interior is ergonomic with easy-to-use controls.

Volkswagen T-Roc

With a high seating position and good visibility, the T-Roc is a comfortable choice. The spacious interior and adjustable seats provide added convenience, while the infotainment system is simple and accessible.

Peugeot 2008

This subcompact crossover stands out with its stylish design, but it also delivers in terms of comfort and usability. It has an easy-access cabin, a well-organized dashboard, and smooth handling.

Volvo XC40

For those seeking a premium feel, the Volvo XC40 is an excellent option. It provides top-tier safety features, a spacious interior, and supportive seats that enhance long-distance comfort.
