New data from over 60,000 UK drivers reveals the 10 most dependable used cars aged 10 to 15 years — and some might surprise you. Here’s what you need to know before buying second-hand.

What Makes a Used Car Reliable?

Buying second-hand can save thousands, but reliability varies. The latest Which? survey of over 60,000 drivers uncovers which older cars are still delivering trouble-free motoring after a decade on the road.

How the Data Was Collected

The survey asked 60,448 drivers about 71,002 vehicles they owned, focusing on breakdowns, fault frequency, and repair time. Cars aged 10–15 years that performed best made the final list.

Lexus CT Hatchback Hybrid (2011–2020)

Topping the list, the Lexus CT stood out with zero breakdowns and only 13% of owners reporting any faults. With many models priced between £5,000–£10,000, it’s a clear second-hand winner.

Mazda MX-5 Convertible (2005–2015)

Known for its fun drive, the MX-5 also proves impressively reliable. Owners reported no breakdowns, and minimal faults, making this drop-top a practical choice for enthusiasts.

Lexus RX Hybrid (2009–2015)

This SUV combines hybrid efficiency with luxury and durability. Despite its age, owners noted few issues, and time off the road was minimal when faults did occur.

Honda Jazz Hatchback (2008–2015)

A long-time favourite for practicality and economy, the Jazz continues to deliver on reliability. Affordable and spacious, it’s a top pick for everyday driving.

Skoda Citigo Hatchback (2012–2019)

Small in size but big on dependability, the Citigo is a city car that proves ideal for urban driving. It earned strong ratings for both cost-effectiveness and reliability.

BMW X1 (2009–2015)

A rare entry from BMW, the X1 exceeded expectations. Though luxury brands often score lower, this compact SUV impressed with low fault rates and good owner satisfaction.

Suzuki Swift Hatchback (2010–2016)

Zippy and economical, the Swift continues to win over drivers with its low maintenance costs and solid reliability scores.

Toyota Yaris Hatchback (2011–2020)

Another hybrid success, the Yaris is praised for its low running costs and longevity. Few breakdowns and satisfied owners land it firmly in the top 10.

Suzuki Alto Hatchback (2009–2014)

One of the smallest and cheapest cars on the list, the Alto proves that budget motoring doesn’t have to mean cutting corners on reliability.

Toyota Auris Hatchback (2012–2019)

Closing out the top 10, the Auris blends Toyota’s hybrid know-how with hatchback practicality. Drivers praised its durability and low service needs.

Why It Pays to Choose Smart

These 10 models show that with careful selection, even decade-old vehicles can provide dependable performance. Choosing wisely could mean years of trouble-free driving — and serious savings.
