Family tragedy leaves loved ones grieving as police begin investigation.
A Louisiana family is facing an unthinkable tragedy after authorities say a grandmother accidentally ran over and killed her five year old grandson on her way to work.
Slidell Police say the crash happened shortly after seven in the morning on November eleven.
Kristen Anders, 55, was backing out of her driveway in Sidell when her SUV struck her grandson, Carson Lawson.
The child had been waiting to leave for school. He died at the scene.
Investigators say Anders was impaired by alcohol and central nervous system depressants. Officers arrested her immediately.
“This is any parent’s worst nightmare,” Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau told Express.
“Not only did this family lose their precious five year old child. They now have to deal with the fact that the grandmother is under arrest. It is devastating. It deeply affected every first responder who arrived this morning.”
Police say the child was standing in the driveway
Police earlier released a statement explaining that the child had been standing in the driveway preparing to leave for school when the SUV hit him.
The home sits about twenty eight miles northeast of New Orleans. Officers say Anders stopped her vehicle as soon as she realized what had happened.
An autopsy for Carson is scheduled later this week, according to the coroner. Carson had celebrated his fifth birthday in June.
Authorities say the investigation remains active.
