Police in New York City have launched an investigation after a human skull and additional skeletal remains were discovered in bushes near the Coney Island boardwalk.
The NYPD said the first discovery was made shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 9 December, when a passerby spotted a skull in vegetation off the Riegelmann Boardwalk.
Officers responded and secured the area, according to a police report obtained by PEOPLE.
More remains found
On Wednesday afternoon, more bones — including human arms, legs and other remains — were recovered from the same location, ABC7 reported.
Some body parts have not yet been located.

Identity and cause of death unknown
The New York Medical Examiner is working to identify the individual and determine a cause of death.
The NYPD has not released further details about how the remains may have ended up there.
Local residents expressed shock.
One person told ABC7: “That’s very extreme… them just now getting found is real sad.” Another resident told Fox News Digital the discovery was “spooky” and “unsettling.”
