We expect the people who enforce the rules to follow them carefully when they head home for the day.
Sometimes, that basic standard completely falls apart on the open road. One simple traffic stop just proved that nobody is above the law.
A shocking discovery
Highway patrol units spend countless nights scanning dark roads for dangerous drivers. Campbelltown traffic officers set up a standard stationary speed enforcement check late Monday evening to keep local streets safe.
They stationed their patrol vehicle along Camden Valley Way in Gregory Hills. That specific stretch of local road carries a strict speed limit of just 80 kilometres per hour.
Suddenly, a rogue vehicle blasted past their position at a truly terrifying pace. The official police radar equipment clocked the unknown driver moving at an astonishing 200 kilometres per hour, according to a report by SkyNews.com.au.
Traffic police quickly activated their lights and chased down the speeding car. They pulled the driver over, only to quickly realize the person sitting behind the wheel was actually a fellow member of law enforcement.
Facing the music
The reckless driver was quickly identified as a 22-year-old police constable. He currently serves in the South West Metropolitan Region of New South Wales, an area known for busy traffic.
He was completely off duty at the time of the massive traffic violation. Despite the shared profession, the officers on the scene immediately treated him exactly like any other civilian suspect.
They forced the constable to step out of his car and undergo standard roadside breath and drug tests. Both of those routine screenings came back totally clear, SkyNews.com.au noted in its coverage.
While the young man was entirely sober, his staggering speed left his colleagues with absolutely no choice. They immediately took legal action against him to protect the public.
Career in jeopardy
Authorities hit the young officer with multiple severe driving charges right on the spot. He received a formal legal notice compelling him to appear in court to answer for his incredibly reckless behaviour.
Those specific charges include organizing or taking part in a race, driving at a dangerously high speed, and exceeding the local limit by more than 45 kilometres per hour. Police instantly stripped him of his driving privileges and suspended his licence.
The disgraced constable now faces a highly uncertain future. He must eventually stand before a judge at the Picton Local Court to answer for his actions on Thursday, July 23.
His career in law enforcement might completely end before it really gets off the ground. The local police department confirmed that the young officer’s employment status is currently under strict internal review.
