American actor Ryan O'Neal, best known for his role in the 1970 film 'Love Story,' has passed away at the age of 82. His son announced the news on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. O'Neal was also known for his roles in films like 'Paper Moon' and 'Barry Lyndon.'

O'Neal's breakthrough came with 'Love Story,' which marked the beginning of the 'chick flick' phenomenon, a genre focusing on love and relationships. For his role in this film, he was nominated for an Oscar.

Two years later, he starred alongside Barbra Streisand in 'What's Up, Doc?', which further boosted his popularity.

In addition to his film career, O'Neal made headlines for his long and tumultuous relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett, known as one of the three angels in the TV series 'Charlie's Angels.'

Fawcett passed away in 2009.

Before his relationship with Fawcett, O'Neal was married and divorced twice. He and Fawcett began their relationship in the late 1970s and were together for nearly 20 years before separating in 1997, reportedly due to his affair with another actress. However, the actors reunited in 2001 and remained together until Fawcett's death.

O'Neal's other notable roles include playing a jewel thief in 'The Thief Who Came To Dinner' and starring opposite his daughter Tatum O'Neal in Peter Bogdanovich's 'Paper Moon' from 1973, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

In 1975, he played a role in Stanley Kubrick's historical drama 'Barry Lyndon,' a film that has gained broader recognition since its release.
