Barcelona Expands Ban on Alcohol Tour Promotions

Others are reading now

Barcelona has long been one of Europe’s top destinations for nightlife and tourism.

But as more visitors flood the city each year, many locals say it’s come at a cost.

Loud, alcohol-fueled parties on the streets and in neighborhoods have created tension between residents and tourists. Now, the city has taken another step to bring back peace and quiet.

A Solution to the Tourism Problem?

The City Council of Barcelona has announced a new ban that stops the promotion and organization of alcohol routes throughout the entire city, reports La Vanguardia.

These “pub crawls” involve taking groups of people from one bar to another, often drinking at each stop.

Until recently, this activity was only banned at night in certain districts. Now, it will be forbidden citywide, 24 hours a day.

The new rule will last four years. It has been approved through a special decree signed by the mayor.

There is now a 20-day period where the public can give feedback. After that, it goes into full effect.

This law stops anyone from organizing or selling these bar tour packages. It also bans any type of advertising connected to them.

The tours are usually run by promoters who gather tourists and take them through a series of bars. The drinks offered are often cheap and meant to be consumed quickly before moving to the next stop.

Disturbs the Peace

Authorities believe this kind of activity is harmful in several ways. It disturbs the peace in residential areas.

It adds stress to already crowded public spaces. It may even lead to unsafe situations, including traffic problems and criminal behavior.

City officials also say this move is about more than keeping the streets quiet. It’s also meant to protect public health.

The plan lines up with Spain’s national law that aims to prevent addiction and reduce harm from substances like alcohol.

In short, Barcelona wants to make sure people can enjoy the city. But not at the expense of those who live there.
