If you’ve ever licked a battery out of curiosity as a kid, one snack company wants to bring that tingly metallic memory back—with chips.
A Weird New Snack

A Dutch snack company is turning heads with what may be the strangest chip flavor ever made: 9-volt battery.
The new tortilla chips, launched by snack brand Rewind, are designed to mimic the tingling metallic taste that many 90s kids remember from touching their tongue to a battery tip.
A Food Safety Nightmare?

While it might sound like a food safety nightmare, the company insists that no real battery materials were used.
Only safe, edible ingredients meant to evoke that familiar (and bizarre) sensation.

Rewind teamed up with chef and flavorist Mattias Larsson, who admitted the request was unlike anything he’d handled before.
“It was definitely an unusual brief,” he said, as cited by OC.
To recreate the effect, the team used citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to trigger a tongue-tingling sensation, and Mineral salts to add a metallic tang.
“The result is surprisingly tasty,” Larsson said, adding that the flavor is odd but strangely appealing. “It’s definitely a flavor that sparks curiosity.”
A Nostalgic (and Edible) Throwback

The launch is part of Rewind’s mission to bring quirky, nostalgic experiences to life through snacks.

According to Antti Lauronen, the creative lead behind the project, it’s all about tapping into “shared weird memories.”
“Rewind is a brand inspired by nostalgia,” Lauronen said. “So we thought what better way to launch than with one of the most bizarre yet universal experiences of childhood?”
Only in the Netherlands—For Now

Right now, the 9-volt battery tortilla chips are only available in the Netherlands.
But Rewind says it’s preparing to roll out across Europe soon, so snack lovers everywhere might get a chance to taste electricity sometime soon.
