According to gardening experts, a layer of about five centimeters is often enough to make a noticeable difference.
Why Bark Mulch Works
Bark mulch doesn’t just retain moisture.
The material also helps keep soil temperature more stable, so roots are not exposed to large temperature fluctuations during hot summer days.
At the same time, natural bark mulch gradually improves soil quality as the material decomposes.
Many prefer untreated bark mulch, such as hardwood or cedar, as it contributes positively to the soil environment.
How to Do It
Start by removing weeds around the rose bush.
Then, water the soil thoroughly before spreading the bark mulch in a layer of approximately five centimeters around the plant. However, avoid placing the bark mulch directly against the stems, as the plant still needs to breathe.
Once the layer is applied, it helps retain moisture in the soil throughout the warm months.

A single layer of bark mulch cannot magically change the weather.
However, it can provide roses with much better conditions to withstand summer heat and continue to produce new blooms.
Therefore, many experienced gardeners choose to give their roses this extra help as early as June, and the reward can be a garden filled with colorful flowers right up until late summer.
