Spring may be here, but that doesn’t guarantee sunshine.

With unpredictable weather and sudden rain showers, drying laundry indoors remains a practical necessity for many households.

If you’re skipping the tumble dryer to save energy or simply don’t have one, there are smart ways to speed up the process without ending up with musty-smelling clothes.

Laundry expert Deyan Dimitrov shares five effective methods that combine heat, airflow, and simple household tools to help your clothes dry faster, fresher, and with minimal effort.

Use an Iron and a Towel

Ironing isn’t just for wrinkles, it can help dry clothes too.

Place your wet garment on a flat surface, like an ironing board or clean countertop. Lay a towel over the top and run a warm iron across the fabric.

The towel absorbs excess moisture while the heat gently dries the material, without damaging the fibres.

Set Up a Fan

If you’re drying small items, a fan can be surprisingly effective.

Position it to blow air across your laundry and use clips to keep the clothes in place.

Make sure there’s enough distance between the fabric and the fan to allow air to circulate freely.

Try a Hair Straightener (Yes, Really)

In a rush? A hair straightener on its lowest setting (around 180°C / 356°F) can smooth and lightly dry cotton garments like shirts, trousers, or T-shirts. Glide it gently over the fabric to remove creases and speed up the drying.

Always check the label first, delicate materials may scorch or melt.

Use a Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier is a great solution for indoor drying. Hang clothes on a rack and place the unit nearby.

Many models have a specific “laundry mode” to speed up drying.

Unlike heated methods, dehumidifiers use dry air, which leaves clothes softer and fresher and prevents mould and musty smells.

Make a DIY Indoor Clothesline

Create your own drying space by hanging a line near a heat source like a radiator or a doorway.

Even without heat, circulating air helps dry laundry faster. According to Dimitrov, the key is airflow, not just temperature.
