A person in Ireland has died after consuming a ready meal contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, triggering a sweeping food recall across multiple supermarket chains.
“Extensive Outbreak”

Health officials have described the incident as part of an “extensive outbreak” of listeriosis, a rare but potentially fatal infection.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) confirmed the fatality and linked the outbreak to ready-to-eat meals produced by Ballymaguire Foods.
The unnamed adult reportedly succumbed to the infection within days of becoming ill.

Over 140 Products Pulled From Shelves

In response to the health threat, Ballymaguire Foods issued a “voluntary precautionary recall” of 141 chilled food products.
These include popular dishes such as lasagnas, pasta bakes, and cottage pies, which were sold under various private-label brands including Tesco Finest and Aldi’s Specially Selected range.
Other affected retailers include SuperValu and Centra.
The recall applies to products sold across the Republic of Ireland, and customers are being urged to check their fridges and dispose of any affected items immediately.
Ballymaguire Apologizes, Promises Full Cooperation

In a statement to Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ, Ballymaguire Foods confirmed that listeria was detected during routine quality control checks at one of its facilities.
The company emphasized the rarity of such incidents and stated it was taking the matter “with the utmost seriousness.”
“Immediately upon identifying the issue, we informed our retail and food-service customers and engaged with all relevant authorities,” a spokesperson said. “All products are being withdrawn from the shelves, and a full consumer communication process is underway.”
What Is Listeriosis

Listeriosis is caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium, which can grow even in refrigerated conditions.
While rare, the infection poses a serious risk to vulnerable individuals, including older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms to Look Out For

Symptoms of listeriosis often resemble a mild flu or include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
In severe cases, the infection can lead to life-threatening complications like meningitis or septicemia.
Health experts note that the average incubation period is around three weeks but can range from as little as three days to as long as 70 days, making it difficult to trace.
Ongoing Investigation and Consumer Warnings

The FSAI said it is actively working with Ballymaguire Foods and impacted retailers to manage the outbreak.
While only one death has been reported so far, officials are monitoring the situation closely and say more cases may emerge.
Shoppers who may have purchased any ready meals from the affected brands are advised not to consume them and to return the products to their place of purchase for a refund.
