Cleaning windows might seem straightforward, but achieving streak-free glass requires more finesse than you might think. Window cleaning is an art form, one that many homeowners opt to leave to the professionals.

Taru Haukijärvi, a seasoned window cleaner from Finland, recently shared her top tips on what not to do to achieve perfectly clean windows.

Here's what she advises against, as reported by the Finnish media outlet Kotiliesi:

  1. Avoid Using the Wrong Tools: Using dirty or damaged tools can not only make cleaning less effective but can also scratch your windows. Always check that your equipment is in good condition; specifically, squeegees should have intact rubber edges to prevent damage.

  2. Mind the Weather: Not all weather is window washing weather. Cleaning your windows in cold temperatures might cause the glass to freeze, while humidity can leave behind a dull film. Sunlight, while seemingly benign, can cause the cleaning solution to evaporate too quickly, leaving unsightly streaks. Optimal conditions are overcast days with mild temperatures.

  3. Simple Soap Solutions: There’s no need for fancy chemicals when washing windows. Ordinary dish soap will do the trick just fine. Combine a few drops with water in a bucket for an effective cleaning solution. Use a microfiber cloth for wiping down the window frames as well.

  4. Less is More with Soap: Contrary to what some might think, more soap doesn’t mean cleaner windows. Overusing detergent can result in a filmy residue that dulls the glass. A light solution is best for avoiding buildup.

  5. Efficiency Over Effort: Window cleaning shouldn’t be a Herculean task. With the right tools and techniques, you can clean your windows effortlessly. Position your squeegee at the correct angle and apply gentle pressure to remove the cleaning solution without leaving streaks.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can keep your windows crystal clear without the extra hassle or the need for professional help. Remember, sometimes less really is more when it comes to effective window cleaning.
