President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have reconciled following a public feud over federal spending.
President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have recently restored their relationship following a public feud that drove them apart last year.
The rift originated after Musk stepped down from his position leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Disagreements over federal spending policy tied to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act quickly led to an open clash between the two.
On his social media platform X, Musk publicly criticized the legislation, referring to it as a “disgusting abomination.”
Trump responded shortly after, claiming Musk went “CRAZY” after the administration decided to roll back electric vehicle mandates.
Musk answered the criticism by pointing to the approximately $300 million in financial support he provided to Republican campaigns through his political action committee (PAC), while directly accusing the president of “ingratitude.”
Following the confrontation, White House officials removed Musk’s access to his designated workspace in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, according to Fox News.
A Gradual Return
The distance between the two leaders proved temporary. According to sources familiar with the matter, the rapprochement began early this year, supported in part by Musk’s pledges to provide fresh financial backing for Republican candidates in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
A former administration official characterized the reconciliation to Fox News Digital as “water under the bridge.”
Musk has since made several public appearances at White House events.
In late September, he attended an AI website launch alongside National Design Studio engineers, and he was later seated at the president’s table during a state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Current administration officials confirm that Musk has resumed regular visits to the executive complex.
Award ceremony
The rekindled relationship culminates Thursday afternoon, when Trump is scheduled to present Musk with the National Medal of Science during an Oval Office ceremony—the nation’s highest recognition for scientific and technological achievement.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston praised the award recipients, noting that the administration values leaders who “ensure America keeps leading the world in innovation,” according to Fox News.
A broader science push
Musk is not the only technology executive being recognized during the event.
According to Reuters, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and AMD CEO Lisa Su are also set to receive the National Medal of Science, while Dell CEO Michael Dell and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
The ceremony reflects a broader White House focus on scientific and technological development, alongside anticipated administrative changes to how federal research funding is managed and distributed.
