A 2015 video showing Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan delivering a United Nations address recently resurfaced online. Viewers immediately noticed her flawless English delivery.
That sparked an avalanche of comments comparing her to Melania Trump, according to the Irish Star.
Entrepreneur Siqi Chen shared his reaction on X. “Wait what? How does the First Lady of China speak better ‘American’ than the First Lady of America?” Chen wrote.
Fierce online debate
Other users echoed that sentiment. “She speaks polished English because she wants to make a good impression, so she makes an effort. The US one doesn’t care, obviously. After all those years in the US #embarrassing,” one user wrote, according to the Irish Star.
Another commenter was even more blunt. “Because the First Lady of China wanted to learn. Our First Lady doesn’t give a s—,” they posted.
The viral moment kicked off a wider discussion about fairness. Some felt the attacks crossed a line, but others highlighted the deep irony given the current political climate.
Cracking down on language
Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14224 in March 2025, which officially established English as the national language of the United States.
The administration recently pushed that mandate further. A new rule requires anyone holding a commercial driver license to speak fluent English.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy celebrated the move on X, writing, “ILLEGALS OUT, VETERANS IN.”
Critics find this push puzzling. Online commentators frequently note that both Melania and her son Barron speak Slovenian at home.
Expanding enforcement
The language rules sit alongside a massive crackdown by federal authorities. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained roughly 65,765 people by July 2026, marking a massive surge.
More than 70 percent of those held in ICE custody have no criminal convictions, according to data from Syracuse University’s TRAC project.
A controversial Supreme Court ruling in 2025 completely changed how ICE operates in major cities. The 6-3 decision allowed agents to conduct roving patrols in Los Angeles.
This means officers can now stop and question people based solely on their appearance or accent, the Irish Star reported.
