A large-scale police operation is underway in Hamburg, Germany, following a shooting incident near a Euro 2024 fan zone on Sunday afternoon local time.

The event took place amidst celebrations for the ongoing European Football Championship.

Axeman Shot by Police

According to reports from German media outlets, a man armed with an axe was shot multiple times by police after he attacked officers and other individuals in the area.

Initial attempts to subdue the attacker with pepper spray were unsuccessful, leading to the use of firearms.

The attacker is now in critical condition. Fortunately, no one else was injured in the incident.

Chaos Before the Poland-Netherlands Match

The shooting occurred as fans gathered for festivities ahead of the Euro 2024 match between Poland and the Netherlands.

An estimated 40,000 supporters were present in Hamburg, ready to march towards the stadium, according to SVT.

Previous Violence at Euro 2024 Events

This is not the first violent incident associated with the Euro 2024 tournament. Earlier this week, a person attacked a private viewing party, injuring several attendees. The perpetrator was subsequently shot by police and succumbed to their injuries.

German broadcaster DW reported that the attacker entered the property where the party was held to watch the match between Germany and Scotland, randomly stabbing participants. Three people were injured, two of whom are in serious condition.

The security measures for Euro 2024 have been extensive, with German police actively working to prevent and respond to criminal activities.
