Negotiations with Putin is a Ukrainian decision

Trending Now

The White House has firmly stated that the decision to negotiate diplomatically with Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace rests solely with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

John Kirby, Coordinator of the National Security Council, emphasized President Zelenskyy's prerogative in determining the terms and timing of any potential negotiations.

Kirby's comments came in response to queries about whether Ukraine should consider dialogue with Russia, especially in light of the uncertainty regarding Congress's approval of new aid.

He acknowledged the escalating threat posed by the increasing number of Russian troops, indicating that the Kremlin is likely to continue its aggressive stance rather than maintaining defensive positions over the winter.

The White House official also highlighted Ukraine's ambition to expand its capabilities beyond mere defense to potentially launching counteroffensives. Kirby emphasized the U.S. commitment to ensuring Ukraine has the necessary resources to pursue its strategies, even as these resources face the threat of depletion.

This statement from the White House underscores the respect for Ukraine's sovereignty in deciding its future course of action, while also recognizing the critical need for ongoing international support.
