Sometimes, a bizarre announcement leaves political observers completely speechless.
A recent building project pitched by the White House has drawn exactly that kind of reaction, and a former president just offered a sharp critique of the plan.
A laughable project
Former President Bill Clinton addressed the Clinton Global Initiative 2026 Summit on Tuesday. He wasted no time before taking a swing at Donald Trump according to the Irish Star.
Clinton did not mention the current president by name, but he zeroed in on Trump’s recent proposal. Trump wants to build a triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., and recently announced it would double as a military drone and sniper facility.
“I suppose I could take my entire allotted time to discuss the self-evident wisdom of building an Arc de Triomphe in Washington to hold all our drones,” Clinton told the crowd. “Some of this stuff — it’s hard to make up.”
The politics of division
Beyond the jokes, the former president shifted to a serious warning about the state of the nation. He condemned the growing reliance on what he described as “zero-sum thinking.”
He warned against leaders who believe that for them to win, others must lose. “Nevertheless, I do understand why so many leaders around the world have chosen this zero-sum approach,” he explained. “Think how richly they have been rewarded for it, in every sense of the word, and this payoff has been more apparent in the United States than any other country”.
Clinton expressed his disbelief at the current political climate. He accused those in power of creating separate rules for themselves while weaponizing the government.
They use the system to “settle personal scores, prosecute enemies, and stamp out free speech,” he added.
Majoring in the minors
The former president also voiced frustration over Trump’s ongoing battle to add his name to the Kennedy Center. He felt the debate was missing the bigger picture.
“I personally think that the way we’ve argued about what’s going on at Kennedy Center and all that kind of stuff, I think we’ve been majoring in the minors,” he noted.
Clinton asked the audience to consider the long-term legacy of these buildings. “Do you really think a hundred years from now, anybody’s going to care very much about who’s names on what building?” he asked. “Isn’t it more important what happens in the building and what happens outside the building?”.
