The incident has renewed debate over campus safety and violent crime in the United States.

Deadly campus attack

According to TV2 News, several people were shot at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 13. US authorities say two people were killed and nine others injured during the attack at the Ivy League campus.

The suspected gunman was later linked to the killing of a university professor in a separate incident days after the initial shooting.

Suspect identified

The US Department of Justice said the alleged perpetrator was 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente. Investigators believe he fled after the Brown University shooting and remained at large for several days.

Two days later, Neves Valente is accused of killing MIT professor Nuno Loureiro at the professor’s home in Massachusetts, according to US officials.

Video confession

After Neves Valente was found dead on December 18 in a storage room, police recovered a video in which he admitted responsibility for the attacks, the Justice Department said. Authorities believe he took his own life.

In the recording, which has not been released publicly, Neves Valente reportedly acknowledged planning the Brown University shooting for a long time and showed no remorse, according to the ministry.

‘I am an animal’

A transcript of the video, translated from Portuguese and cited by the Justice Department, includes Neves Valente referring to comments made by former US President Donald Trump after the shooting.

Trump had told reporters he hoped police would catch “that animal.” In the video, Neves Valente said: “I especially like Trump’s shit, calling me an animal, which is true. I am an animal, and so is he, but I have no love – I have no hatred for the United States.”

Authorities said the suspect did not provide a clear motive for the attacks in the recording.

Investigation details

Neves Valente complained in the video about injuries sustained during the shooting, including being struck in the eye by a shell casing.

The Justice Department said the footage confirmed investigators’ belief that the attack was premeditated.

Officials said the discovery of the video helped close the investigation, though it offered little insight into why the shootings occurred.
