Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, testified before his former colleagues in the U.S. Congress, where he was challenged on the Turmp Administrations policies about foreign affairs.

Unsurprisingly, Rubio spend a lot of time defending the administrations approach to Russia, but he was also grilled over Donald Trumps plans to lift sanctions on Syria.

According to Rubio, the transitional government in Syria could be on the brink of collapse, if the U.S. does not help it.
“The transitional authority, given the challenges they’re facing, are maybe weeks, not many months away from potential collapse and a full scale civil war of epic proportions”, Rubio said.
What is going on in Syria?

The Syrian Civil War broke out in 2011-2012, where discontent with the sitting president, Bashar al-Assad’s, government led to large-scale protests.
Numerous protest were suppressed with violence, and for the rest of the 2010’s, Syria was in constant conflict with foreign nations intervening.

In 2024, a coalition of opposition groups joined forces and launched a massive offensive.
In a matter of weeks, Bashar al-Assad fled the country and a transitional government was put in place with Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa as interim president.

The problem is that while a dictator may have been removed, the Syrian population i strongly fragmentet.
A large number of the countries minorities see the new government as a, extension f the terrorist group, ISlamic State (IS).
Europe preparing to do the same

It is not just the U.S. that are talking about lifting sanctions on Syria.
Ambassadors from the EU’s 27 member states have mad a preliminary agreement for also lifting sanctions, that was put in place to pressure the Assad-regime.
