The governor of the state has since halted the execution.
Christa Pike has woken up in a hospital bed after surviving a scheduled lethal injection on September 30, when state officials administered two doses of pentobarbital. The 50-year-old prisoner is now alert and talking, according to her legal team.
“Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care,” her attorneys confirmed in a statement on Tuesday, according to Euronews.
“Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed,” her team added, noting that “her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”
Medical experts suggest that the lethal compound likely leaked into her arm tissue rather than flowing into her bloodstream due to an intravenous line failure. Legal filings state that both of her arms were swollen, burned, and blistered when she arrived at the facility.
Demanding preserved evidence
Lawyers representing the death row inmate are heading to court in Nashville on Wednesday. They want a judge to force corrections officials to secure all physical evidence, including needles, execution logs, and drug lot numbers.
According to Pike’s lawyers, at least seven needles were used to inject her, one of which “was bent at a 90-degree angle when it was removed.”
State attorneys argue that a court order is completely unnecessary. The Tennessee attorney general’s office stated that the department is “obliged to maintain this evidence in other cases and must assure it is preserved.”
The botched procedure has sent shockwaves through the state government. Governor Bill Lee called the event “deeply disturbing” and ordered a “comprehensive, third-party review” of prison protocols.
All scheduled executions across the state are now suspended while investigators look into the breakdown. Tennessee’s prison chief has also resigned in the wake of the scandal.
Firing squad
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed when Pike was just 18 years old. Had the lethal injection succeeded, she would have been the first woman executed in the state in over two centuries.
The botched execution of Christa Pike has already forced a new approach to executing prisoners on death row.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced yesterday that Nidal Hasan, the murderer who killed 13 American soldiers and injured 32 at the Fort Hood military base back in 2009, will now be executed by firing squad sometime in the near future.
