Cops deploy high-tech drones to snare injured suspect in swamp

Getting pulled over by the police is enough to make anyone’s heart race.

Most drivers cooperate, but a few panic and try to run away. When someone decides to flee into a wild environment, nature can step in with a harsh reality check, reports PEOPLE.

A reckless drive

The trouble started on Sunday when troopers spotted a Toyota Supra weaving dangerously through traffic. According to a press release from the Louisiana State Police, the sports car had already smashed into a concrete barrier and blown out a tire before officers pulled it over.

When troopers approached the vehicle, they immediately noticed that the driver showed clear signs of intoxication. That was when the routine stop took a wild turn.

Instead of following orders, the suspect leaped over the side of the elevated highway. He dropped straight into the dark waters of the bayou below.

Into the swamp

Local deputies quickly joined the hunt, searching the thick brush for the missing motorist. PEOPLE reported that authorities eventually spotted the man walking along a nearby highway, but he refused to give up.

As officers closed in, the driver darted back into the murky marshland. That second escape attempt proved to be a painful mistake because an alligator was waiting for him.

The department stated that the man faced an immediate attack. “When law enforcement approached, he fled again into a swampy area, where he was attacked by an alligator and sustained injuries to both arms,” the press release alleges.

Caught by technology

Even with severe bite wounds, the desperate driver kept running through the deep swamp. Police finally deployed high-tech drones to track his movements from above, allowing officers to pinpoint his location and make the arrest.

Emergency crews took the suspect to a hospital to treat his arms. A news release from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening and noted that the alligator was unhurt.

The driver now faces multiple criminal charges, including driving while impaired, hit-and-run, and resisting an officer. Following the chaotic chase, the agency issued a stern warning to the public about the dangers of driving under the influence.

The department emphasized the unexpected risks of running from the law. “Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences. Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver,” the press release states.
