Europe’s biggest music festival is supposed to unite nations through song.

Fans expect dramatic costumes and catchy pop tunes when they tune into the annual broadcast. Instead, this year’s massive grand final sparked a deeply political scandal.

A shocking symbol

Bulgarian pop star DARA just captured her country’s very first victory at the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest.

She took the massive stage in Vienna and won the international crowd with a catchy pop track called Bangaranga.

The singer, whose real name is Darina Yotova, secured an impressive 516 points overall. However, her historic win instantly triggered a massive online backlash.

According to United24Media, furious viewers quickly dug up a controversial photograph from her social media history. They found an Instagram post from December 2025 featuring a large illuminated “Z” symbol.

That specific letter has served as a widely used symbol of Russian military propaganda since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

The Kremlin connection

The political drama goes far beyond a single photograph. Official credits reveal that Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos was among the writers of the winning track.

Kontopoulos has a long history of collaborating with the Russian entertainment industry. He previously worked alongside prominent Russian singer and Vladimir Putin supporter Philipp Kirkorov on multiple Eurovision entries.

According to the original report, the Greek hitmaker continued his Russian partnerships long after the 2022 invasion. Social media sleuths found footage of him attending a Moscow concert alongside Kirkorov in October 2025.

The situation escalated when Kirkorov publicly claimed his own team participated in preparing the stage production for Bulgaria. Neither the singer nor the Bulgarian public broadcaster BNT have addressed these shocking claims.

Ignoring the rules

Kontopoulos is heavily associated with a songwriting group unofficially referred to by fans as the “Dream Team.” They dominated the contest for years by writing specifically for Russian artists.

The scandal comes at a highly sensitive time for the song contest. British lawmakers recently criticized Eurovision director Martin Green over his stance on the ongoing conflict.

Green sparked fury after he said Russia could theoretically return to the contest if a Russian broadcaster demonstrated independence from the Kremlin.
