People mocked his reaction online.
Stage backgrounds at political events are carefully planned so every camera shot looks supportive. Organisers select the people standing behind the microphone to ensure they smile, clap, and wear the right gear. On Wednesday, however, one carefully placed spectator decided to ruin the picture.
Chaos behind the podium
While Vice President JD Vance spoke at a Republican midterm rally in Cincinnati, Ohio, a hidden demonstrator standing right behind him suddenly caused an uproar, according to the Irish Star.
Dressed in a suit, tie, and red campaign cap, the man blended in completely before tearing the hat off his head and shouting at the speaker.
Nobody on the broadcast could make out what the man yelled. Still, video from the event shows the surrounding crowd turning on him immediately with loud “booing”, the Irish Star reported.
Vance spun around to watch security guards escort the demonstrator out of the venue while attendees chanted “USA USA.” Once the man was gone, the vice president turned back to the microphone and joked that dirty hair gave the undercover critic away.
“Now that guy, he was trying to pretend to be MAGA; you notice how he took off his Make America Great Again hat and threw it down. Here’s the problem, ladies and gentlemen: he told on himself, because when he took his hat off, it was very obvious that he had not washed his hair in three months. And we all know that the people who haven’t washed their hair in three months vote for Democrats, not Republicans,” Vance told the crowd, as quoted by the Irish Star.
Mocked over the comeback
Online viewers quickly criticised the vice president’s insult, with one person calling him a “lunkhead”, according to the Irish Star.
That critic wrote: ” Ha ha I’m pretty sure he wanted nothing to do with maga !! You’re so smart you couldn’t have a smarter reply than your hair is dirty???? F—- lunkhead.”
Another viewer mocked his wit by posting: “This protester spikes his MAGA hat and gets hauled out. Vance’s rebuttal: the guy looks like he hasn’t washed his hair. Truly the intellectual heir to Lincoln.”
Other social media users argued that regular disruptions will keep plaguing both Vance and President Donald Trump at public events, the Irish Star noted.
One X user wrote: “This administration is so unpopular this will keep happening. I give it a month before they start requiring social media checks to allow people to attend these.”
A fourth commenter agreed, writing: “Every day there’s a protester at these rallies. It shows that people are fed up with Trump and his terrible economy.”
