A tragic maritime disaster unfolded off the coast of Sicily earlier this week, leading to the recovery of six bodies, including those of British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah.
Only One Unaccounted for
The yacht, named Bayesian, sank on Monday after being struck by a tornado, leaving six people unaccounted for initially, according to Liternaute.
On Thursday, divers confirmed the recovery of the last missing man’s body. This brings the total death toll to six, with five bodies having been retrieved earlier from the wreckage, which now lies about 50 meters deep, approximately 700 meters from Porticello.
As of now, only one woman remains unaccounted for, and officials are working on identifying the recovered bodies.
The British Bill Gates
Lynch, known as the "British Bill Gates," was celebrating his recent legal victory in a fraud trial in the United States with friends, family, and colleagues aboard the yacht. Other notable passengers included Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, along with Chris Morvillo, Lynch’s attorney in the fraud case.
Witnesses reported that the yacht sank rapidly after its mast snapped. However, preliminary investigations suggest that the boat’s keel, crucial for stability, may not have been properly positioned during the storm, raising questions about human error in the disaster.
Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which built the Bayesian, criticized the decisions made on board. He stated, "Everything points to a series of errors," emphasizing that passengers should not have been in their cabins when the storm struck. With the tragedy unfolding quickly, many passengers found themselves trapped as the yacht tilted dangerously, leading to this heartbreaking loss of life.
