A devastating earthquake struck southern Morocco just an hour before midnight on Friday, causing significant damage in the tourist city of Marrakesh.

The preliminary death toll stands at 632, according to Morocco's Interior Ministry as reported by Moroccan TV.

The quake, which had a magnitude of 6.8, also left 329 people injured. Its epicenter was located southwest of Marrakesh, a city with over 900,000 residents and a popular destination for foreign tourists.

Residents report that several buildings in the old part of Marrakesh have collapsed.

The earthquake has raised concerns about the structural integrity of buildings in the area and the preparedness for natural disasters.
