Earthquakes in Nevada sparks rumors of military testing at Area 51

Seismic activity in the state housing the infamous Area 51 has reignited speculation regarding what is going on at the military base.

A burst of seismic activity near one of America’s most secretive military sites has reignited online speculation.

The location has spent decades at the center of UFO folklore, but experts point to a more grounded context.

Shallow tremors

According to the Daily Express, US Geological Survey data recorded 17 earthquakes around Area 51 within 24 hours.

The tremors reportedly struck at shallow depths of about 2.5 miles and measured between 2.5 and 4.4 in strength.

Area 51 sits in Nevada, a state described by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology as highly active seismically, despite the base not being near a major US fault line.

Testing questions

The Daily Express reported speculation that the activity may be linked to military work or underground nuclear testing.

The report also cited President Donald Trump’s October social media post, in which he said that “because of other countries nuclear testing programs,” he wanted the “Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis.”

The US remains among the signatories to the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which bans nuclear test explosions.

A geophysicist has a different explanation however.

Foreshock for a bigger event

On May 2, geophysicist Stefan Burns released an update on the seismic activity in the area, which he said had now increased to 53 events as of May 2.

In the comment section to the post on X, a user asked Burns, what he thought was happening, to which Burns replied that he believed the tremors could be a “foreshock to a bigger shake”.

A history of classified work

The base remains closed to the public and is now overseen by the US Space Force.

Its secrecy has helped make it a major destination for UFO enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists.

The site has also played a role in classified aircraft development, including the A-12 spy plane, F-117 Nighthawk and D-21 drone.

In February, Barack Obama said: “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them – and they’re not being kept in Area 51. There’s no underground facility, unless there’s some enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.”
