Republican Rep. Don Bacon accused Trump of excusing Putin and mishandling Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Many Americans were outraged when Trump announced his diesel deal with Russia on Truth Social over the weekend.

Some Republican lawmakers have joined a bipartisan push to stop the deal, calling it an alleged “betrayal of the people of Ukraine.”

But a retiring Republican politician from Nebraska took it even further. He took to social media to voice his displeasure with Trump and his deal with Putin.

Breaking rank

GOP Representative Don Bacon has come out swinging against Donald Trump. The retired Air Force brigadier general openly slammed the president this week over his handling of the war in Ukraine.

“He’s an apologist for Putin and the Russian invasion. It’s an embarrassment,” Bacon wrote on social media.

Trump had brushed off questions about Russian strikes on energy targets, pointing fingers back at Ukraine instead. “Well, Ukraine hit many sites the day before,” Trump argued during a media scrum.

‘Embarrassing’

By Wednesday morning, Bacon escalated his attacks. “Putin is playing President Trump like never seen before to a U.S. President,” the congressman posted online. “It’s embarrassing.”

The attack comes after the administration has been accused by Ukraine of curbing intelligence sharing with Kyiv and limiting access to Starlink satellite networks after Trump announced a ceasefire on energy sites between Ukraine and Russia — something both countries were unaware of and that Russia has not upheld.

“The Administration’s decision to reduce intel sharing to Ukraine & access to Starlink equates to aiding the invader & the war criminal who bombs cities,” Bacon argued.

He then threatened Trump’s legislative future up until the election: “Does the Administration think it will get ANY support for the remainder of the 119th Congress? Their agenda is dead unless they change paths.”

Lines are being drawn

Marc Short, former chief of staff to Mike Pence, called the arrangement “blood money that Putin will use to kill Ukrainians while feeding intel to Iran to go after our men and women in uniform.” Short also branded the transaction “morally wrong and economically senseless.”

Bacon agreed with Short after different Republican lawmakers went on television over the weekend to defend Trump’s deal with Putin, calling it a deal with American interests in mind.

“You’re right Marc. Too many so-called conservatives have lost their moral scruples,” Bacon wrote.
