Nigel Farage is under investigation after receiving a gift worth millions from a cryptocurrency investor before entering parliament, raising questions about whether parliamentary rules were properly followed.

The inquiry could potentially lead to sanctions against the Reform UK leader, including suspension from the House of Commons.

Donation scrutiny

According to TV2 News and the BBC, Farage received a gift valued at around 43 million Danish kroner in 2024 from tech investor and crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.

The gift was reportedly given shortly before Farage announced his candidacy for the British general election.

British parliamentary rules require MPs to declare financial interests received within the year before being elected. The current investigation will examine whether Farage failed to comply with those obligations.

Farage has denied wrongdoing and argued that the support related to personal security arrangements rather than political activity.

Crypto connections

The case has drawn additional attention because of Harborne’s significant financial backing of Reform UK.

According to the BBC, Harborne donated around 77 million Danish kroner to the party in a single contribution during 2025, making it the largest known donation from a living individual to a British political party.

TV2 News reported that the crypto investor gave a total of approximately 11.941.964,20 Pound sterling to Reform UK over the year.

The Conservative Party has accused Reform UK of promoting policies that could benefit Harborne’s business interests, including proposals aimed at turning Britain into a major cryptocurrency hub.

Possible consequences

Labour officials have also criticised Farage over the matter.

According to TV2 News, Labour chairwoman Anna Turley said Farage had failed to answer legitimate questions surrounding the gift and his financial relationship with Harborne.

If parliamentary authorities determine that rules were broken, Farage could face penalties ranging from a formal apology to suspension from parliament.

Under House of Commons procedures, a suspension lasting at least ten days could trigger a recall petition in his constituency and potentially force a by-election.
