A dramatic U.S. action overseas has prompted a sharp response from one of Donald Trump’s closest European allies. The comments frame the event as part of a much larger shift in global power and stability.

The remarks also carry clear implications for Hungary’s future direction.

First reaction

According to Digi24.ro, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban issued his first public response after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

Orban, who has long positioned himself as politically aligned with Trump, nonetheless criticised the U.S. operation in unusually stark terms.

“In the first days of this year, we received an important reminder that the liberal world order is in a state of disintegration,” Orban said, referring directly to the U.S. military action.

World order shift

The Hungarian leader argued that Trump’s return to the White House marked a decisive turning point. He described it as a “fatal blow” to the existing global order.

“However, the new world is still in the making. Even more unstable, unpredictable and dangerous years await us,” Orban wrote in a Facebook post cited by Digi24.ro.

His comments framed the Venezuela operation not as an isolated event, but as evidence of a deeper systemic breakdown.

Hungary’s position

Orban linked his analysis to domestic politics, saying that if his party, FIDESZ – Hungarian Civil Union, wins the parliamentary elections in April, Hungary will pursue a policy of neutrality.

“We do not want to send young Hungarians to the front and we do not want to destroy the Hungarian country and economy,” he said.

He added that Hungary “will stay away from the war” in Ukraine, reinforcing his long-standing opposition to deeper military involvement.

Political message

The statement reflects Orban’s broader narrative that Hungary should prioritise stability and sovereignty amid global turmoil.

By distancing himself from the consequences of great-power conflicts, he positioned his leadership as a safeguard against what he described as an increasingly dangerous international environment.
