Colombia is once again reeling from political violence after an armed teenager critically injured Senator Miguel Uribe during a campaign rally in Bogotá. The 39-year-old conservative candidate, known for his opposition to President Gustavo Petro, remains in intensive care following emergency surgeries.
Gunfire at a Rally
The attack occurred Sunday in Fontibón, a western district of the capital, as Uribe addressed supporters. The assailant, identified as a 15-year-old, shot Uribe three times, twice in the head, before attempting to flee. Captured shortly after, the teenager was heard pleading, “I did it for money, for my family.”
Authorities confirmed he was previously enrolled in Petro’s youth reintegration program, which he left after just two months.
As reported by 20minutos, the shooter is under medical care for a leg wound sustained during the arrest. He will face charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms. The pistol used, a Glock 9mm, was purchased in Arizona in 2020 and is now in custody.

Intensified Security Concerns
Uribe’s condition is described as “extremely critical,” with limited response to medical treatment. His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, has publicly asked Colombians to “keep praying for a miracle.”
President Petro condemned the attack and reported threats against his own daughter and other cabinet members. A multi-party statement was issued Sunday, uniting political factions across the spectrum in rejection of the violence.
The incident has prompted the suspension of campaign activities by other candidates, including ex-mayor Claudia López and former minister Mauricio Lizcano, citing security risks. The Attorney General’s office is investigating possible links to organized crime and has announced a $630,000 reward for information on those behind the plot.

Uribe, who carries a powerful political legacy through his family, has campaigned on restoring law and order. While his polling numbers had improved in 2025, he remained a mid-tier contender. Now, his fate, and the future of Colombia’s political landscape, hangs in the balance.
