A serious traffic accident in suburban Chicago has drawn emergency crews and shut down roads as investigators work to determine what went wrong. The collision involved a school bus carrying students and another vehicle, leaving families and local officials awaiting answers.
Authorities say the incident happened early in the morning and remains under investigation.
Fatal collision
A head-on crash between a school bus and a passenger car in Manhattan, Illinois, killed one person and injured 11 others, NBC News reported.
Illinois State Police said the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The bus was transporting 10 students from Manhattan School District 114 at the time of the crash.
No major injuries were reported among the children, according to state police.
Emergency response
The collision occurred at about 8:17 a.m., the Manhattan Fire Protection District said. The bus driver and students were evaluated at the scene and later taken to nearby hospitals “due to the severity of the accident.”
Police said roads in the area were expected to remain closed for several hours while the investigation continued. The cause of the crash has not yet been released.
