When a maximum-security jail houses a famous inmate, guards must watch their every move.

The stakes are incredibly high. But sometimes the tightest safety nets fail in the dark.

Years after a shocking death inside a New York cell, fresh details are painting a grim picture of those final days.

Patterns in prison

The death of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein remains a point of public fascination.

To find out exactly what happened, The New York Times recently spoke with over 40 inmates, jail employees, and federal officials. Their new report highlights the troubling reality inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York.

According to the investigation cited by TMZ, Epstein showed clear signs of a fatal plan. He made direct inquiries about building a deadly device. Nicholas Tartaglione, a former cellmate, told the newspaper that the wealthy sex offender suddenly asked him, “How do you make a noose?”

Tartaglione also claimed he once discovered a deadly rope hidden right under Epstein’s mattress. The signs of extreme distress did not stop there. During one terrifying night, the former cellmate recounted finding the financier completely unresponsive and dangling from a noose tied to their bed.

The final goodbye

Tartaglione used a hidden razor to cut the man down. He immediately started chest compressions to save his life. Another former cellmate, Efrain Reyes, reportedly caught Epstein toying with a clothesline. Reyes told the publication that he gave a stern warning and told him not to kill himself in their cell.

Following his eventual suicide, investigators reportedly found “multiple nooses” scattered inside the cell.

The evidence was glaring. He also left behind handwritten notes that pointed toward his dark intentions. One scribbled message read, “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.”

The disgraced millionaire understood his grim reality as he awaited federal sex trafficking charges. He knew the odds were against him. He allegedly told Reyes that he would never “see the street again” and described the prison environment as “no way to live.”

Epstein was ultimately found dead on August 10, 2019. Guards discovered him hanging from a fabric noose tied to his bunk bed frame.

The new reporting highlights the glaring security failures that allowed him to take his own life, as reported by TMZ.
