Allegedly, they were told to give up half their wealth to avoid the same fate.

Browder told the US Senate that after Khodorkovsky’s conviction, oligarchs turned to Putin for protection.
“From what followed, it appeared that Putin’s answer was, ‘50%,’” Browder said.
