Members of the Kennedy family have spoken out after learning that the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, could be renamed to include President Donald Trump’s name.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has carried the late president’s name for decades and serves as a national memorial to his legacy.

Board vote sparks backlash

The center’s board voted unanimously on December 18 to rename the venue the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to an announcement by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

In a post on X, Leavitt said the decision reflected “the unbelievable work President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building,” citing improvements to its finances, condition and reputation.

She added: “Congratulations to President Donald J. Trump, and likewise, congratulations to President Kennedy, because this will be a truly great team long into the future!”

Legal doubts raised

Former Democratic congressman Joe Kennedy III questioned whether the change is even possible under the law.

Responding on X, he wrote “The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and named for President Kennedy by federal law. It can no sooner be renamed than can someone rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says.”

Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and niece of John F. Kennedy, also criticised the proposal. She argued that the move clashes with the center’s mission to support artistic freedom.

In a statement on X, she wrote: “President Trump and his administration have spent the past year repressing free expression, targeting artists, journalists, and comedians.”

She added: “President Kennedy proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity, and compassion… President Trump stands in opposition to these values.”

Trump responds

Donald Trump said he was “surprised and honored” by the decision. Speaking to reporters, he praised the board members, whom he appointed earlier this year.

“We saved the building because it was in such bad shape, physically, financially, and in every other way,” he said. “Now it’s very solid, very strong.”
