Mary Trump has said Donald Trump’s noticeably fuller-looking hairstyle reminds her of her grandfather, Fred Trump, particularly during the period after he developed Alzheimer’s disease.
According to a SiriusXM interview with host Dean Obeidallah, the president’s estranged niece made the comparison after his hair drew fresh attention during a recent public appearance in Las Vegas, where the change in his look became a topic of discussion.
Family memories return
When Obeidallah raised speculation about whether Donald Trump might be wearing a hairpiece or had otherwise changed his hairstyle, Mary Trump largely avoided judging his appearance or commenting on whether she thought the new look suited him.
She instead recalled that Fred Trump had been self-conscious about his hair loss for many years and had paid close attention to his appearance. She said that after he developed Alzheimer’s, he began wanting his hair to appear noticeably fuller.
She said her grandfather later wore a toupee that did not fit well and also colored both his hair and moustache. According to her account, Donald Trump found those changes embarrassing and reacted negatively to the way his father looked at the time.
The similarities in their apparent concern about their hair were what caught her attention and brought those earlier family memories back to mind.
No medical evidence offered
Mary Trump did not say that Donald Trump had dementia, and she offered no medical evidence suggesting that his hairstyle was connected to cognitive decline or any other neurological condition.
She also acknowledged that she did not know whether he was actually wearing a wig, using a hairpiece, or relying on another styling method to create a fuller-looking appearance.
The Irish Star writes that Trump’s hairstyle also prompted jokes, commentary and speculation on social media following the Las Vegas event, where the change in his appearance drew noticeable attention.
No evidence cited by the outlet connected Trump’s hairstyle to any medical condition, and the discussion remained based on personal observations, family memories and public speculation.
