A lot of people are afraid that the upcoming election will not be free and fair and that the Trump administration will try to interfere in the election. So today thousands of people are taking to the streets in Washington to make their voices heard.
An ode to the King
Crowds are coming to the National Mall in Washington for a major rally today titled March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote. Organizers expect thousands of people near the Lincoln Memorial, according to Reuters. The gathering marks 63 years since historic civil rights speeches took place at the landmark.
Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and the Drum Major Institute, led by Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King, organized the event.
Prominent political figures will address the crowds during the morning program starting at 9 a.m. local time. Confirmed speakers include Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
“Defending the vote means defending the foundation of our democracy,” King III said in a statement. “Sixty-three years after my father stood at the Lincoln Memorial, we are called to march again, not only in remembrance, but in action.”
A battle for democracy
The march follows a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that repealed key parts of the Voting Rights Act regarding “race-based redistricting.”
Republican-led statehouses acted quickly to redraw congressional maps ahead of November’s midterm elections. Organizers also point to efforts by President Donald Trump to try to limit mail-in voting and curb federal anti-discrimination rules.
“We stand on the same ground because the work is not finished,” Sharpton wrote in a letter to supporters. “The right to vote, the very foundation of our power, is being chipped away in statehouse after statehouse. When the vote is weakened, every other right grows fragile with it.”
A moral roll call
For many, returning to Washington is about preserving voting rights for future generations. Organizers emphasize that keeping voting accessible remains essential to defending civic rights for every American.
“The March on Washington 2026 is a moral call to protect democracy for every generation,” said Arndrea Waters King. “We march to defend the vote, honor those who sacrificed for it, and ensure that every voice is protected.”
