A major fire at a Russian oil facility has intensified tensions between Moscow and Kyiv.
The latest incident has triggered fresh accusations and raised concerns among local residents.

According to Reuters, cited by Digi24, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of increasing attacks on civilian infrastructure following a drone strike on the Tuapse oil refinery in southern Russia.

“Drone attacks on civilian infrastructure are becoming more frequent,” Putin said in televised remarks. “The latest example is the attacks on energy facilities in Tuapse, which could have serious environmental consequences.”

Fire and fallout

Reuters reports that the Ukrainian military confirmed responsibility for the strike, describing it as part of a broader campaign targeting Russia’s energy sector.

Videos circulating online showed thick black smoke rising above the refinery after the attack, while authorities urged residents to stay indoors and close windows.

Despite the scale of the fire, Putin said local officials had not identified major threats. “It seems that there are no serious dangers, and people are managing to cope with the challenges they face on the ground,” he said.

Repeated strikes

This marks at least the third attack on the Tuapse facility in recent weeks. Previous incidents disrupted operations and caused environmental concerns, including reports of oily residue falling over the nearby port city.

Officials said earlier strikes had already forced a halt in oil shipments, highlighting the vulnerability of key infrastructure.

Local authorities ordered evacuations near the refinery, directing residents to temporary shelters.

Rising tensions

Moscow has accused Ukraine of worsening global energy instability by targeting oil infrastructure, while Kyiv has previously argued that Russian exports have limited influence on global markets.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has not responded to the latest claims, according to Reuters.

Residents have voiced frustration online, questioning why air defences failed to prevent repeated attacks and accusing authorities of inaction.

Wider context

The Tuapse refinery is a significant facility, producing millions of tonnes of fuel annually, including diesel and other oil products.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said efforts to counter drone attacks were ongoing, as Ukraine continues to step up strikes on energy targets.

The developments come amid stalled peace talks and shifting international focus, adding further uncertainty to the conflict.
